Operating System Software
An operating system or OS is a software program that enables the computer hardware to communicate and operate with the computer software. Without a computer operating system, a computer and software programs would be useless.
What the Operating System Does
- It provides a way for the user to interact with the computer
- user interface - the portion of a software program or hardware device that is used to navigate and control aspects of the software program or hardware device.
- It manages the processor, or central processing unit
- It manages the memory and storage
- It manages the computer system’s hardware and peripheral devices
- It provides a consistent means for software applications to work with the CPU - software application coordination
