Unit 5 - April 29th and 30th

Introduction to Computer Concepts/Applications
Unit 5 - Computer Networks

What is a network, and what are the advantages of setting up one?

What is a network?

What are some benefits of networks?

What is the difference between a client/server network and a peer-to-peer network?

What is the difference between peer-to-peer networks and client-server networks?

Which one would you use for personal/home use?

For wireless access at home, you’ll need:

·                     Subscription to broadband Internet access, such as DSL or cable.
·                     Modem that goes with the type of access you chose.
·                     A wireless router to connect.
·                     A wireless card for your computer.

Let’s take a look at a typical wireless setup at your home:

Be able to identify the main components you see above and know what they do.

Unit 4 - April 27 and 28

Intro to Computer Concepts/Apps
Unit 4 - OPERATING SYSTEMS SOFTWARE

An operating system or OS is a software program that enables the computer hardware to communicate and operate with the computer software. Without a computer operating system, a computer and software programs would be useless.

What the Operating System Does

·        It provides a way for the user to interact with the computer
o   User Interface - the portion of a software program or hardware device that is used to navigate and control aspects of the software program or hardware device.
·        It manages the processor, or central processing unit
·        It manages the memory and storage
·        It manages the computer system’s hardware and peripheral devices
·        It provides a consistent means for software applications to work with the CPU - software application coordination

Organizing Your Computer: File Management

It is important to know how to management the files on your device:  photos, videos, documents, etc.

The following video shows one way of managing the files (renaming, moving, deleting, etc.) on an android phone:

Unit 3 - April 24 and 28

Introduction to Computer Concepts/Apps
Unit 3 - Software

Application software
Software is a set of instructions that tells the computer (cell phone, gaming console, etc) what to do. These instructions are also referred to as programs and apps. They allow you to interact with and use the computer.

Application software is what you use to do tasks at home, school and work—write letters, send e-mail, balance a budget, create a presentation, edit photos, take online courses, surf the net, etc.

What are the categories of Application Software
Application software can be broken down into 4 categories: Productivity, Media, Home/Entertainment, and Business.  It is important that you understand the purpose of each of the types of software listed below.
·                     Word Processing
·                     Spreadsheet
·                     Presentation
·                     Database
·                     Personal Information Manager
·                     Personal Finance
·                     Image Editing
·                     Audio Editing
·                     Video Editing
·                     Media Management
·                     Gaming
·                     Education
·                     Drawing
·                     Home Business

Work with a group to come up with a one sentence definition of each of the following.  You can Google the definition or use http://www.computerhope.com ...just put it in words that you understand.   Also provide examples.  See below:
·                     Word Processing is used for composition, editing, and formatting of various document such as resumes, letters, invitations, flyers, brochures, reports, etc.  Microsoft Word is an example of word processing.
Remember this is not an assignment you turn in.  You will need this information for your quiz.

Concepts Unit 2 - April 22, 23

Intro to Computing to Computer Concept/Applications

Unit 2 - Understanding the Parts (Hardware)
www.computerhope.com

In this unit, we will look at your computer’s hardware— the physical components of the computer.
·         A computer does 4 main things: inputs data, process the data into information, outputs this information, and stores this information.
·         The system unit is the box that contains the central electronic components – RAM, CPU, hard drive, power unit, etc.
·         Peripheral devices—monitors, printers, keyboards, speakers, etc. Basically anything attached to the system unit.

Section 1 - Input Devices

An input device is any hardware device that sends data to the computer, without any input devices, a computer would only be a display device and not allow users to interact with it, much like a TV.
Examples:  Mouse, Keyboard....

Section 2 - Output Devices
Any hardware device that receives or displays output from a computer.
Examples:  Monitor, Speakers...

Section 3 - Storage Devices
Alternatively referred to as storagestorage media, or storage medium, a storage device is a hardware device capable of holding information. The hard drive of the computer is referred to as the 'secondary' storage and is usually internal. The secondary storage could also be a removable or external
Examples....

Section 4 - What's in the Box?

The system unit is the box that contains the central electronic components
·         Motherboard - The motherboard is a printed circuit board that is the foundation of a computer and allows the CPURAM, and all other computer hardware components to function and communicate with each other.
·         RAM - Alternatively referred to as main memoryprimary memory, or system memoryRandom Access Memory (RAM) is a computer storage location that allows information to be stored and accessed quickly from random locations within DRAM on a memory module. Because information is accessed randomly instead of sequentially like a CD or hard drive the computer is able to access the data much faster than it would if it was only reading the hard drive. However, unlike ROM and the hard drive RAM is a volatile memory and requires power in order to keep the data accessible, if power is lost all data contained in memory lost.
·         CPU - Alternatively referred to as the brain of the computerprocessorcentral processor, or microprocessor, the CPU is responsible for handling all instructions it receives from hardware and software running on the computer.
·         Hard Drive - the computer's main storage media device that permanently stores all data on the computer.
·         Power Unit - The Power Supply Unit is an internal hardware component used to supply the components in a computer with power by converting potentially lethal 110-115 or 220-230 volt alternating current (AC) into a steady low-voltage direct current (DC) usable by the computer.
·         Expansion  Slots - An expansion slot is an opening located inside a computer on the motherboard that allows additional boards to be connected to it. For example, if you wanted to install a new video card in the computer you'd purchase a video expansion card and install that card into the compatible expansion slot.
·         Ports  - A hardware port or peripheral port is a hole or connection found on the front or back of a computer that allows computers to access external devices such as computer printers
